Job and Organization Overview
Jews For Racial & Economic Justice is a 6,000-member grassroots organization and the home of New York’s Jewish Left. For over 30 years, JFREJ members have organized alongside our neighbors to transform New York from a playground for the wealthy few into a real democracy, free from all forms of racist violence, (with playgrounds for all of us!)
We are currently seeking a part-time organizer to staff JFREJ’s four caucuses.
In 2014, staff and JFREJ member leaders organized and started the Jews of Color Caucus, the first identity based caucus within JFREJ. Since its founding, other member leaders have since started the Poor and Working Class (PWC) Caucus as well as the Mizrahi/Sephardi (M/S) Caucus, and Disability Caucus (for members who identify as or as having disabilities/chronic illness/neurodivergence).
These caucuses are base-building spaces that serve to ensure that a diverse community of Jews have their voices heard and leadership developed, and are included in decision-making throughout the organization. Our caucuses and their members have contributed meaningfully to organizing at JFREJ and create a politically and culturally engaged affinity space that contributes to JFREJ's many campaigns and influences the overall political organizing strategy of JFREJ. (More information about JFREJ, its strategies and members can be found in our Member Handbook.)
This part-time organizer would support the JOC, M/S, PWC, and Disability caucuses to implement their visions and goals alongside the rest of our member organizing. In future the Caucus Organizer may be responsible for co-creating and implementing a yearly fellowship program for caucus members. The position will be a combination of remote and on-site in New York City for 3 or 4 days per week (negotiable).
Job Responsibilities:
The Organizer will be responsible for the following:
- Working with the Director of Organizing, and other program staff to recruit (base-build) new members and develop programming for our caucus constituencies.
- Developing the leadership of caucus members to build organizing skills, engage in political education, and participate in JFREJ campaigns and other member teams.
- Managing our budget for caucus-related programming.
- Planning and co-facilitating meetings, affinity groups, and retreats for caucus members throughout the year.
- Ensuring consistent, transparent communication between caucus members, the rest of the JFREJ membership, and JFREJ staff.
- Implementing a meeting calendar and structure that helps build relationships, share organizational updates, make decisions, and get work done;
- Organizing trainings and political education workshops.
- Working closely with the Director of Organizing to meet goals and deadlines through supervision every other week.
Qualifications:
Jews For Racial & Economic Justice seeks candidates who are results-oriented, excel at building relationships, and have demonstrated success managing complicated projects. The Caucus Organizer will have:
- Alignment with JFREJ’s mission and values.
- A demonstrated commitment to meeting (and exceeding) high standards and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.
- Proven success in relationship-building and base-building as a professional or volunteer community organizer, and an understanding of leadership development.
- Strong group and meeting facilitation skills and experience mediating conflict in oppressed communities.
- Demonstrated ability to break down large projects into smaller discrete tasks that can be distributed to member leaders.
- Deep knowledge of and commitment to racial justice, economic justice, disability justice, and radical multiethnic and multilingual inclusivity.
- Experience developing curriculum and leading workshops or trainings on racial justice and other anti-oppression topics.
- A commitment to excellence and a sense of humor.
- Commitment to, and experience with, collaborative team structure and work environments.
- Commitment to principles of intersectional feminist leadership.
