EMERGENCY PURIM

It's been a long two years, and the world continues to feel scary. Our communities need renewal, and it is the play in the depth of winter, the burlesque, the laughter at power that has renewed us for centuries. How do we find joy and laughter in times of emergency? JFREJ's answer to this question is...EMERGENCY PURIM!!! We will be outside! Everyone masked and masquerading! There will be a short performance! There will be a parade! There will be a dance party! JFREJ is committed to accessibility via our hybrid events policy, so you will also be able to participate virtually if you aren't able to attend in-person. Click here for information on accessibility at the in-person event as well as virtual participation. If the weather is bad, we will postpone EMERGENCY PURIM to the following weekend, (Sunday, March 20).

ACCESSIBILITY AT PURIM:

Here’s what to expect in-person:

Part 1 - Pageant/Shoil: Roughly 30 minutes, stationary, standing. Amplified sound, live and recorded music, loud booing of Haman. Provided: sturdy metal folding chairs for those who need them; ASL interpretation; earplugs; sensory supports; a staffed accessibility table for help with other needs.

Part 2 - Parade: Walk 1.1 miles/16 blocks. Live music, loud booing of Haman. Speed will be controlled for accessibility. Curb cuts available at all relevant points. Crowd will separate by about 100ft for 1 block where there are steps on the main route. Pavement is smooth and even for the entire route except the last block, which goes over slightly uneven flagstones with some gaps between them.

Part 3 - Dance Party: Stationary, 20-90 minutes depending on weather. Live and recorded amplified music. Pavement smoothness is variable. Provided: sturdy metal folding chairs for those who need them; earplugs; sensory supports; a staffed accessibility table for help with other needs.

Virtual Access:

100% of the event will be live-streamed. We will provide a facilitated Zoom room with live captioning. Folks are invited to watch the livestream on one device while zooming into the zoom room on another (because video quality on screen-sharing is low within Zoom), or you can have both open in two different windows on the same computer.

The Zoom room will open at 2:00pm on Sunday, March 13th (March 20th if we need to postpone do to weather). We'll kibbitz, show off our costumes, dance together, and maybe even make some hamantaschen. Come in costume! Bring groggers, snacks, and the beverage of your choice! Set up your room with a disco ball and glitter bombs if you want to :). Or just come as you are and enjoy some friendship and fellowship as we reach for lightness in heavy times.
