JFREJ's 36th Anniversary Mazals
At the 2026 Mazals, JFREJ honors Arielle Angel, Molly Crabapple, the NYC Immigration Courtwatchers and Mi Tlalli.
36 years ago, JFREJ’s founders saw that having an organized and strategic Jewish Left was critical to building progressive power in NYC. It is impossible to imagine all the victories JFREJ has been part of over the decades without our founders’ vision for and commitment to building a home for the New York Jewish Left.
It took 36 years to get us to this point where the wider Left, and the Jewish Left, are ascendent in New York. Now, we challenge ourselves to lean into our power, to wield it as fiercely as possible to mitigate the devastating violence of this political moment – and to finally enact the better future we deserve.
At the 2026 Mazals, we celebrate the organizers who built everything that got us here, the courageous truth-tellers and activists who are steadfast in exposing fascism and protecting each other from it, and the possibility of actually creating the NYC of our liberated dreams.
We are thrilled to present Mazals Awards to Arielle Angel, Molly Crabapple, the NYC Immigration Courtwatchers and Mi Tlalli! We are honored to be led through the Mazals program by the one and only Cynthia Nixon who will be our emcee.

Why are we making such a big deal out of the number 36? In Jewish mysticism, the number 18 is associated with and imbued with the concept of “Life”. Because 36 is exactly twice 18, it translates to "Double Life." This concept is often applied to charitable giving or celebrating joyous occasions to wish someone a long, abundant, and vibrant life. Double chai is also an affirmation of the preciousness of every human life in the face of political tyranny and war machines that devalue lives here in the US and abroad.
