For the last four months, hundreds of JFREJ members have taken action against City Council Speaker Menin & Council Member Dinowitz's "buffer zone" bills. These bills grant NYPD full discretion around what types of speech and assembly are acceptable, empower the NYPD to engage more racial profiling and policing of students, and threaten workers' ability to picket.

TAKE ACTION NOW AGAINST CITY BUFFER ZONE LEGISLATION!

Read an op-ed by JFREJ Executive Director Audrey Sasson in the NY Daily News about why JFREJ opposes this legislation. The City Council voted to pass the the bills in late March, and on Friday, April 24, Mayor Mamdani vetoed one of them (Intro 1B - focused on houses of worship), and declined to sign the other (Intro 175B - focused on educational facilities), which passed with a veto-proof majority. Read JFREJ's statement celebrating the veto here

Speaker Menin has until May 30th to bring Mayor Mamdani's veto of 175B to the City Council for an override vote. If two-thirds of the council (34 out of 51 council members) vote to override the mayor's veto, Intro 175B becomes law. If fewer than 34 council members vote to override, OR if Speaker Menin declines to bring the veto to a vote, we will have defeated Intro 175B for good.
