Position Description
JFREJ is seeking a full-time Campaigns Director to lead JFREJ’s power-building and campaigns strategy. The Campaigns Director will hold the big picture of JFREJ’s renowned campaign work, the issue-based efforts to win a New York in which all of us are free to thrive. They will build campaign leadership teams and work closely with movement allies to set short and long-term goals, develop strategy, and lead implementation of campaigns. They will also manage campaign-related staff and develop our team’s capacity to build winning campaigns.
The Campaigns Director will play a vital role in the design and oversight of all of JFREJ’s campaigns. In the coming years, this will include efforts to combat the austerity agendas of Mayor Adams & Governor Hochul, fighting back against giveaways to billionaires and defending our schools, libraries, and critical services from cruel and irrational cuts. It will also include campaigns to reduce the size and scope of the carceral state, investing instead in care, wellbeing, and the institutions that deliver real safety for New Yorkers. The campaign director will manage JFREJ’s campaigns against antisemitism, including efforts to fight the MAGA right in New York. They will also lead campaign work related to Israel-Palestine as a local issue, such as defending the rights of all New Yorkers to engage in and advocate for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions. The goal of JFREJ’s campaigns is a city transformed, with a feminist, caring economy and the abolition and transformation of our systems of policing and mass incarceration.
This is a senior-level role for someone with demonstrated experience in organizing, with an appetite for building power through hard-hitting campaigns. The ideal candidates will have a proven ability to get things done and coordinate among interdependent and complex teams and programs. The person in this role will also be a gifted manager with a genuine love for training and developing kick-ass organizers.
Job Responsibilities
The Campaigns Director will be responsible for the following:
Partnering with allies and leading JFREJ’s staff and members in developing and implementing hard-hitting issue-based campaigns
Designing and leading participatory campaign development processes that engage members in developing power analysis, goals, strategy, tactics, metrics, and means of assessment
Representing JFREJ in key New York coalitions and campaigns
Working closely with the Political Director, Communications Director, and Organizing Director to create and align work plans
Assessing short-term and rapid response campaign threats and opportunities, including those related to attacks from the right
Managing 1-3 campaign-related staff
Qualifications
Jews For Racial & Economic Justice seeks candidates who are high impact, low ego. We’re looking for someone results-oriented who excels at building relationships, and has demonstrated success managing complicated projects. The ideal candidate for Campaigns Director will have:
Alignment with JFREJ’s mission and values;
5-7 years of experience in organizing and campaigning as a professional or volunteer community organizer;
At least 3 years of management experience;
Experience designing campaign strategy and tactics and executing campaign plans, including experience with power-mapping, SWOT analysis, and strategic assessment;
Ability to manage and oversee multiple campaigns at once;
Experience with a wide range of campaign approaches, with a demonstrated experience with grassroots campaigns, legislative campaigns, and electoral politics;
Familiarity building, leading, and working within coalitions;
Strong facilitation skills;
Experience with using or a strong willingness to learn how to use EveryAction (CRM) and Slack;
Strong emotional intelligence and trustworthiness.
A sense of humor and ability to be nimble in an ever-shifting political landscape. Commitment to, and experience with, collaborative team structures and work environments.
Experience building and leading in multiracial organizations and coalitions, and a strong demonstrated ability to organize for racial and economic justice with integrity.
Experience leading or supporting the scaling of a small-to-medium sized organization in a period of growth, a plus.
