Position Description

JFREJ is seeking our first Finance Director to lead our talented Finance & Operations team while strengthening the capacity of our senior staff in overall financial management and planning. At this pivotal time in our growth, we are excited to be hiring for a new senior leader who will help us move into our next chapter strategically and sustainably.

We are looking for a talented systems thinker with significant experience managing financial planning for non-profit organizations, to help ensure the strategic vision of the organization is matched with robust financial planning and oversight. The role involves managing the budgets, financial reporting, and cash flow monitoring of both JFREJ Action (501c4) and its sister organization JFREJ Community (501c3) through a cost-sharing agreement between the two independent entities, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and city laws. It also involves leading and supporting the Finance & Operations team as a whole and ensuring that all of our backend systems are running smoothly, including HR support and benefits management, office systems, vendor relations, and IT.

Our ideal candidate is just as comfortable in the weeds as they are zooming out to see the big picture and to support the Executive Director in regular financial reporting and planning - with precision, efficiency, and accuracy. They have strong management experience and an interest in growing team members’ leadership; they enjoy tackling complex infrastructure challenges and creating “order out of chaos” in a way that is empowering and user-friendly; and they are eager to apply their extensive finance skills towards a mission-driven organization in the wider movement for racial and economic justice. We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. The candidate will need to live in NYC starting in the first quarter of 2023.

Qualifications

Jews For Racial & Economic Justice seeks candidates who are low-ego/high impact, results-oriented, excel at building relationships, and have demonstrated success managing complicated projects. The ideal candidate for Finance Director will have:

  • Alignment with JFREJ’s mission and values.

  • Experience having bottomline responsibility within a larger team for the quality and content of all financial data and reporting in a small to medium sized non-profit organization.

  • Minimum of 5 years of broad financial management experience, two or more in a senior leadership role.

  • Ability to communicate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with -- programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds.

  • Experience with cost-sharing agreements between 501c4 and 501c3 organizations and a track record of creating systems for efficient implementation of the terms.

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and wear many hats in a fast-paced environment.

  • Meticulous attention to detail and keen analytic and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.

  • Track record of devising and effectively implementing systems for seamless coordination between finance and fundraising teams.

  • Proficiency in Quickbooks (or similar accounting software) and Excel.

  • Strong emotional intelligence, integrity, and trustworthiness.

  • A sense of humor and ability to be nimble in an ever-shifting political landscape.

  • Experience and ease with CRMs generally (with EveryAction, a plus), GoogleSuite, and Slack.

  • Experience or working knowledge of fiscal sponsorship programs, a plus.

  • Experience working in a membership-based organization, a plus.

Salary and Benefits: The salary for this position will be in the range of $80,000-$90,000, with an extremely competitive benefits package and generous personnel policies including: 100% employer sponsored premiums for healthcare, employer 401(k) contribution, flexible work schedule, 18 paid holidays per year, 15 vacation days in first year and 20 in following years, 12 sick and safety leave days, family leave benefits that exceed NYS requirements, and sabbatical leave every 5 years.
