The Mazals
December 19th, 2019
5:30pm reception, 7:00pm program
El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY

Also honoring: Make the Road NY, Mariame Kaba, and the 2009 JFREJ Board of Directors

Tiffany Cabán is a career public defender and former candidate for district attorney in Queens, New York. In four years at New York County Defender Services and three years at the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Practice, Tiffany represented over a thousand indigent clients in cases from turnstile jumping to homicide. Her experiences there—confronting a system criminalizing poverty, mental health issues, and substance use disorder—lead her to run to transform the Queens District Attorney’s office in Summer 2019.

We honor Tiffany Cabán in particular because her scrappy grassroots campaign brought together an unprecedented coalition fighting for a new vision of people-powered justice. That vision activated local energy and garnered national and international attention, setting the agenda for the elections, and pushing all candidates to meet the call for new positions on cash bail, jails, real estate accountability, immigration, and sex work.

“…stages like this were not made or built for people like me. And that has changed. We build the stages. We create the spaces. We create movements. We drive change.” —Tiffany Cabán

We lift up Tiffany Cabán because despite a narrow defeat in her first race, her remarkable campaign and organization changed the game and the conversation fundamentally. We honor her for the risks she took, the inspiration she provided to a burgeoning Left in NYC, and the values she continues to stand for.

We are thrilled to honor her contributions to our city, state, and movement with our Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Risk Taker Award!
