Anti-Oppression Workshops

JFREJ’s trained facilitators have led workshops for Jewish and mixed groups; for high school students, campus, synagogue, and community groups.  Time, format and emphasis on particular exercises are tailored to address the needs of your group.

Dismantling Anti-Semitism/Anti-Jewish Oppression

This workshop examines how oppression works on a personal, community and institutional/systemic level, and focuses specifically on Anti-Jewish Oppression and Islamaphobia. The workshop takes participants through a range of exercises to examine the messages we have received about people who are or perceived as Arab, Jewish, Middle Eastern, or targeted as such. Throughout the workshop we will begin to examine our reactions and a range of responses for recognizing, challenging and interrupting oppressive behaviors in ourselves, our communities and society that target Jews, Arabs and Muslims.

Understanding and Fighting Racism as Jews
2-day workshop; 3-hour sessions. This workshop is a forum for Jews to critically address and engage in anti-racist work and organizing. Through interactive exercises, role plays and discussion, we investigate our personal relationship to racism; the connection and differences between racism and anti-Semitism; relationship of class to institutionalized oppression; fears and blocks about anti-racist work; structural and institutional forms of racism, bias and privilege; how to empower Jews to take action and strategize for change; what it means to be an ally fighting racism and how we approach multifaith, multiracial coalition work.

Anti-Semitism and Jewish Identity
1-day workshop; 3-4 hour session. The workshop is a forum for Jews to critically engage with the issue of anti-Semitism as it affects contemporary Jewish identity. Through a variety of role plays, discussions and interactive exercises, participants will examine personal histories with anti-Semitism; explore how our own fears and shame prevent us from addressing the complexities of anti-Semitism; disentangle ways that race and class inform anti-Jewish bias; strategize about how to fight anti-Semitism; and empower us to reach across boundaries that divide communities.
