Beyond the Pale mixes local, national, and international political debate and analysis, from a progressive Jewish perspective with the voices and sounds of contemporary Jewish culture, from film critics to filmmakers, novelists, poets, and musicians.

Beyond the Pale guests have included Jewish elected officials, such as Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Assembly member Deborah Glick, City Council member Ronnie Eldridge, and Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger; social-justice seeking rabbis, such as Rabbi Rolando Matalon, Rabbi Sami Barth, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, and Rabbi Camille Angel; noted writers such as Grace Paley, Tony Kushner, and Sarah Shulman; journalists such as Michael Tomasky, from New York Magazine, Alisa Solomon and Jim Hoberman from the Village Voice, and Bob Morris from the New York Times; Jewish peace activists such as Michel Warshawsky and Ruchama Marton; and CUNY student activists, labor activists, activists in the city schools, gay and lesbian Jews battling homophobia in Jewish life, and women working to fight domestic violence in the Jewish community.

Beyond the Pale is the only Jewish program on radio or television devoted to bringing a progressive Jewish perspective to political and cultural debates. In politically reactionary times like these, when the public voices of the Jewish community align themselves with the conservative forces that currently dominate local and national politics and political discourse, Beyond the Pale brings audiences the critical perspectives, and visions for social change that are the proud legacy of Jewish radicalism.

Beyond the Pale is one of a strong group of shows on WBAI that bring to life the vibrant multi-racial culture of the city including Radio Free Eiran (Irish), Radio Bandung (Asian), the Latino Journal (Latino), Crescent Rising (Muslim communities).
