Victory against racist ads! But there's more work to be done!
In response to public outcry to Pamela Geller's Islamophobic ads, the Metropolitan Transit Authority voted last night on new guidelines that will prohibit advertisements that the M.T.A. “reasonably foresees would imminently incite or provoke violence or other immediate breach of the peace.” It is important to note that they did not prohibit “viewpoint ads” altogether; free speech without hate will still be allowed on M.T.A. property.
There is much work still to do! We must ensure that these new M.T.A. guidelines aren’t used to stop the speech of those working against oppression.
Our task continues to be to oppose the racism and Islamophobia of Geller's ads as well as the wave of Islamphobic hate speech and violence we have seen accelerating in the past few months. As we speak out against the words of Geller and her allies, we must continue to demand an end to the use of the NYPD for surveillance of Muslim communities and other violations of First Amendment rights to freedom of religion, assembly and speech.
Let’s continue to organize to see the REAL change we want in NYC!
