This year’s theme is On the Front Lines for Freedom and we are so pleased to honor and celebrate the work of activists whose courage and commitment inspires and challenges us all:
- Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who put himself at significant personal risk earlier this year by writing in the New York Times Magazine about his experiences as an undocumented immigrant in order to raise awareness and highlight the activism surrounding this important issue.
- United We Dream, who have organized a youth-led immigrant community movement advocating for equal access to higher education, galvanizing a national debate rooted in genuine grassroots activism and providing a voice for a silenced population.
- Freedom Riders Reverend C. T. Vivian and Joan Pleune, who we are honored to celebrate on the 50th anniversary of the journey they took to challenge racist segregation in the South by putting their own bodies on the line, filling the jails, assembling in the face of violence, even risking their lives for the cause.
